All VST sound content (such as loops, samples, presets / programs / kits for Cubase, Nuendo, HALion, Groove Agent, Padshop, etc.) is managed in the Steinberg Library Manager. If you have already installed a Steinberg product via the Steinberg Download Assistant, the Steinberg Library Manager is already installed on your computer.
If Steinberg Library Manager is not installed, download it here:
-> Download the latest Steinberg Library Manager
It is important to understand that the Steinberg Library Manager manages the VST Sound Content and needs to know or register the location of the content. If the content does not appear in Steinberg Library Manager, it will not be available in Cubase, for example.
Move VST Sound Content using the Steinberg Library Manager (recommended)
If the VST Sound Content is already installed, but you want to change the location, follow these steps:
- Open the Steinberg Library Manager
- Click on "MOVE" at the VST Sound Content you want to move
- The Steinberg Library Manager will prompt you to choose a new destination. Select the new location and confirm.
Steinberg Library Manager will now move the VST Sound Content files to the new location and register them accordingly.
It's important to note that when you move content, the Steinberg Library Manager not only relocates the files on your hard drive but also ensures seamless access for your DAW or instruments to the content in its new location.
Move multiple VST Sound Content Sets simultaneously
If you want to move several VST Sound Content Sets at once, you can first select all the contents to be moved using the checkbox in the "MOVE" button and then click "MOVE" to select the new location.
Registering VST sound content from an already existing target location (e.g. an external drive)
If you move VST Sound Content that's already registered in the Steinberg Library Manager to a new location using your computer's file browser, or if you connect an external hard disk already containing your VST Sound Content, or if you copy content from another location to your computer, the Steinberg Library Manager needs to register the new location.
- Double-click one of the .vstsound files in the new location
- The Steinberg Library Manager opens. Select "Register in Place"
-> The Steinberg Library Manager will register the VST sound content in its current location.
- Click "OK" to continue and wait for the registration to complete
- The Steinberg Library Manager reports the successful registration via another pop-up window ("VST Sounds registered successfully."). Click "OK" to confirm.
Important: This registration is done automatically for all .vstsound files in this folder. If there are multiple files within the same folder, a simple double-click on any individual .vstsound file will initiate the registration of the entire folder's contents.
However, if your VST sound content is distributed across multiple folders, each of these folders must be registered individually.
Before installation: Change default location
When you perform an installation via the Steinberg Download Assistant, the VST Sound Content is copied to this default location:
Windows | C:\ProgramData\Steinberg\Content |
macOS | /Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Content |
The default installation location can be changed in Steinberg Library Manager:
- Open the Steinberg Library Manager
- Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner
-> The line "Library Default Location" opens up - Enter the new location or click the folder icon and select a destination folder
This custom installation path is now used by the Steinberg Download Assistant for the installation of VST Sound Content.
Note: If the Library Default Location is empty, the Steinberg Library Manager will automatically install the VST Sound Content to the default location. Already installed VST Sound Content will not be moved by changing the Library Default Location.
