Problem
After installing a download suggested by the Steinberg Download Assistant under Updates → VST Sounds, an error message appears in Cubase, Dorico, Nuendo, VST Live, or HALion Sonic, informing about a missing license for HALion Sonic content:
No License Found
No license for HALion Sonic Factory Content has been found in your account, so your software cannot run. Click"Retry" if a license has just been added to your account.
Another symptom: Sounds for which a license is missing are marked with red key icons or warning symbols in HALion Sonic's MediaBay.
Background
In some cases, users were temporarily able to access a download titled “Install Missing VST Sounds” in the Steinberg Download Assistant, for which they did not have a license.
Solution
Please note that license errors can have various causes. In these articles, you’ll find more information on general troubleshooting for missing licenses:
- Steinberg Activation Manager: No license found
- A (red) warning sign or key symbol is displayed at some content
However, if you recently (before August 13, 2026) installed the “Install Missing VST Sounds” download via the Steinberg Download Assistant and subsequently encountered license errors with HALion Sonic content, it is likely that this inadvertently installed content for which you do not have a license.
To remove the unlicensed content, please follow these steps:
- Open the Steinberg Library Manager.
- Select HALion.
- In the entries of "HALion Sonic Factory Library" and "Sonic Selection", click the REMOVE button to uninstall the related content.
- Close the Steinberg Library Manager.
- Open the Steinberg Download Assistant.

Reinstall "HALion Sonic Selection - Content".

- Nuendo 13 and later
- Dorico 5 and later
- VST Live (all versions)
