What do the terms EUCON, EuControl and Steinberg EUCON Adapter mean?
EUCON (or EuCon) is a protocol for controlling digital audio workstations (DAW) via remote controller by Avid (former Euphonix). It is needed by the corresponding controller software for managing the communication between DAW applications (e. g. Cubase or Nuendo) and connected remote controllers.
Avid provides different versions of controller software: EuControl, EuControl WS and WS Control
The required version depends on the specific remote controller model. See detailed information under 'What is the difference between Avid Artist and Avid Pro controllers?'
The compatibility of Cubase/Nuendo with the controller software by Avid is ensured by Steinberg EUCON Adapter which is being installed automatically by current Cubase/Nuendo versions. Further information under 'Steinberg EUCON Adapter versions and installation'.
Avid/Euphonix remote controller requirements
- Less expensive and compact devices of the Avid Artist series as Artist Transport, Artist Mix and Artist Control use the software EuControl. EuControl is also required for the controllers PT Dock and S3. When using a Cubase version older than Cubase 5.5 or a Nuendo version older than Nuendo 7, these devices also require an 'EuCon Artist' license on USB-eLicenser.
- Remote controllers of the Avid Pro series as MC Pro, System 5-MC, System 5 Fusion and System 5 Hybrid have an extended range of functions and address professional users. These controllers require the software EuControl Workstation (short: EuControl WS) and a 'EuCon Pro' license on USB-eLicenser.
- The controller software WS Control is being used solely by the S6, which also is part of the Avid Pro series. 'EuCon Pro' license on USB-eLicenser required.

Which Cubase/Nuendo versions require an EUCON USB-eLicenser license?
'EuCon Artist' license
Controlling Nuendo 3 through 5 and Cubase 4 through 6.5 by the PT Dock, the S3 or any Avid Artist series controllers is only possible with an 'EuCon Artist' license on USB-eLicenser.
Nuendo 5.5 and later and Cubase 7 and later do not require an 'EuCon Artist' license when being used with one of the devices mentioned.
See overview here: Avid/Euphonix remote controller requirements
'EuCon Pro' license
Using a Avid Pro series controller requires a 'EuCon Pro' license on USB-eLicenser.
This applies to Nuendo 3 and Cubase 6.0.3 and later using the devices MC Pro, System 5 MC, System 5 Fusion and Sytem 5 Hybrid. Nuendo 7.0.20 and later and Cubase 8.0.20 and later additionally support the S6 which also requires a 'EuCon Pro' license.

How to obtain and activate an EUCON license
Before you start, please verify whether your Cubase/Nuendo version requires an EUCON license:
Required EuControl versions by Cubase/Nuendo versions
If so, this is what you need to be able to request, download and store the required license:
- A MySteinberg account for registering your EUCON-based remote controller.
- An USB-eLicenser (dongle) on which the license can be stored. Read more on USB-eLicensers...
If you need an EUCON license, your MySteinberg account is set up and you have an USB-eLicenser, please proceed as follows:
1. Requesting an activation codes
- Log in to your MySteinberg account.
- Click on [Register hardware].
- Under 'Other', click on [Avid/Euphonix].
- Select your EUCON-based controller.
- Click on [Continue].
- Now the activation code for your EUCON license will be displayed and also sent to you by email.
2. Activating the license
- Open the eLicenser Control Center (Windows: Programs, macOS: Applications) on your computer. It is being installed along with any Steinberg software.
- Optional, but recommended: Apply the 'Maintenance & Online Synchronisation' by clicking on 'Perform Maintenance Tasks' (or click on the [Maintenance] button at the top right if not shown).
- Make sure the USB-eLicenser is connected and displayed by the eLicenser Control Center. If the USB-eLicenser appears to be missing, please click here.
- Click on the green button [Enter Activation Code] at the upper left of the eLicenser Control Center.
- Enter the activation code you've received when registering the remote controller. (Copy & paste is possible.)
- Click on [Continue] and finally on [Download License] to complete activation.
- The EUCON license will be stored permanently on the USB-eLicenser.
- If the required Avid controller software has been correctly installed and you've setup the Remote Controller in Cubase/Nuendo (see Troubleshooting), your remote controller is now ready to use.
Troubleshooting
Folgen Sie diesen Schritten, wenn der Controller trotz scheinbar korrekter Installaiton keine Verbindung zu Nuendo/Cubase aufbaut.
- Make sure you have installed the latest update of Cubase/Nuendo.
- Make sure the required Avid software is installed and up-to-date: Artist Serie | Avid Pro
- Make sure the firmware of the remote controller is up-to-date and complies with the requirements of the required Avid software.
- Verify if your Cubase/Nuendo version requires an EUCON license and make sure it is being displayed in the eLicenser Control Center (installed along with Cubase/Nuendo). See 'Which Cubase/Nuendo versions require an EUCON license?'
- Make sure 'EUCON' has been added as 'Remote Device' in Cubase/Nuendo: Devices > Device Setup... > Remote Devices
If EUCON is missing, click on the plus symbol at the upper left of the 'Device Setup...' window and select 'EuCon' from the list of available entries. - Verify the firewall settings of your system and, if necessary, setup exceptions for Cubase/Nuendo and the Avid software.
- Verify the 'Parental Control' settings and adjust them if necessary.
- Mac OS X: Enabel 'Prevent App Nap' for the Avid software.
- Verify the network connections incl. wires, hardware and software etc.
